NSU Returns to Action on Sunday Against UMBC at the JMU Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team is looking for its first road win of the season as they head to Harrisonburg, Va., on Sunday to take on UMBC at the James Madison Invitational. Game time is at 12 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

All-Time Series: This is the first meeting between NSU and UMBC.

Last Time Out: Senior forward Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Norfolk State past Virginia University-Lynchburg 116-40 at Joseph Echols Hall on Friday afternoon. The last time NSU held an opponent to 40 points was last season when the Spartans defeated Bethune-Cookman, 67-40 on March 2.

The 76 point win was the largest margin of victory for the Spartans (4-6) since they defeated St. Paul's by 83 points on Jan. 16, 1996. The win also set a Division-I record for the Spartans and ranks fifth all-time in NSU's record book.

Gordon made all eight of her field-goals and shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free throw line. Five other Spartans also finished the game in double-figures. Junior Ebony Brown contributed 18 points and three assists. Brown was 4-of-6 from 3-point range on the afternoon. Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman Logan Powell had a season-high 14 points to go along with her eight rebounds. Junior Quineshia Leonard scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Freshman Dominique Harper rounded out the scoring effort for NSU with 10 points and a season-high nine assists.

The Spartans shot 63.2 percent (48-of-76) on the afternoon and were 7-of-16 from 3-point range. NSU also finished the night shooting 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Spartans outrebounded VUL, 53-29. NSU also posted 32 assists, which set another Division-I record for NSU. The last time NSU had at least 20 assists in Division–I was in the game against Morgan State on Jan. 14, 2012. The Spartans finished that game with 23 assists.

About UMBC: The Retrievers (1-9) are coming off of a 56-49 loss to Loyola Maryland on Dec. 21 at Reitz Arena. UMBC only had two players score in double-figures as Sara Tarbert led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Amanda Hagamand also posted 10 points and seven rebounds.

UMBC shot only 35.6 percent (21-of-59) on the afternoon and outscored Loyola Maryland 34-8 in the paint.

Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game followed by Ebony Brown, who is averaging 11.8 points per game. Rachel Gordon is third in scoring for NSU this season, averaging 11.6 points per game.

Winning the Rebounding Battle: The Spartans outrebounded VUL, 53-29. The Spartans currently rank third in the MEAC with 43.5 boards per game.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon is in 8th place all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 853 rebounds. Gordon needs 22 more rebounds to tie Beverly Davis for 7th place all-time career rebounding at NSU.

Cracking the Top 10: Rae Corbo ranks 12th all-time in career free throws made at NSU with 211 made shots. Corbo needs to make only 16 more to tie Charlette Fayton for 10th all-time career free throws made at NSU.

NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 4 in the nation in rebounds per game (13.5 rebounds per game) and Rae Corbo is No. 36 in free throw percentage (87.8 %).

As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in 14 different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in seven different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 13.5 rebounds per game.
