NSU Suffers 94-50 Loss to JMU in JMU Invitational Championship Game

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison shot 46.3 percent from the floor to hand Norfolk State a 94-50 loss in the championship game of the JMU Invitational on Monday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The loss drops NSU to 5-7 on the season, while JMU improves to 10-3.

Junior forward Quineshia Leonard turned in a good all-purpose effort with 12 points, 10 rebounds and one block to pace the team. Leonard also made the JMU Invitational all-tournament team.

The Dukes were the early aggressors starting the game on an 11-0 run that included a trio of back-to-back 3-pointers from Precious Hall and Kirby Burkholder with 17:27 to go in the half. Burkholder shot 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from 3-point range on the afternoon and led all scorers with 22 points.

Leonard nailed a jumper to score the Spartans' first points of the game with 16:19 left before halftime to make the score 11-2. She finished the game shooting 45.4 percent (5-of-11) from the field.

JMU capped a 19-4 run on a layup from Crystal Ross with 9:29 remaining in the half to extend the Dukes' lead over NSU to 30-6. The Spartans never led in the game.

Freshman Ronesia Spicer scored her first points of the season with 5:29 on the scoreboard as NSU continued to trail JMU, 39-12. Spicer finished the day with five points, one block and one steal.

Burkholder knocked down a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to send the Dukes into halftime with a 47-17 lead over NSU. The last time the Spartans scored less than 20 points in half was against UT-Pan American on Nov.29.

After the break, JMU got things started on a 15-7 run that ended with two free throws from Toia Giggetts to make the score 62-24 with 16:04 left in the game. The Dukes 75.8 percent (25-of-33) from the charity stripe on the afternoon.

Over the next four minutes, NSU would only make three field-goals, which included a pair from junior Rae Corbo and one from Leonard as well as a couple of free throws from junior Rachel Gordon. JMU continued to lead NSU, 67-32, at the 12:28 mark.

The Dukes continued to be aggressive in the second half as Ross completed another trip to the free throw line to cap a 14-7 run with 8:01 remaining in the game. JMU led by as many as 46 points with 5:31 to go after Lauren Okafor made a pair of free throws to make the score 89-43.

Freshman Kieera Basey drained her second 3-pointer of the game with 5:12 on the clock. Basey shot 50 percent (2-of-4) from behind the arc. Leonard scored the last points of the game for NSU at the free throw line with 1:17 left to play to give us the final score of 94-50.

For the game, the Spartans shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) and totaled 30 rebounds, while committing just 16 turnovers. The Dukes outscored NSU 42-20 in the paint and 32-25 in bench points.

Leonard was the only Spartan to score in double-figures. Gordon tallied nine points and eight rebounds, Basey had eight points and Dominique Harper posted six points.
