HAMPTON, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team suffered an 83-42 loss to the Hampton Lady Pirates on Monday night at the Hampton University Convocation Center. The Spartans have not won against Hampton since defeating them 70-66 on December 2, 2006.
Hampton improved to 11-0 in the MEAC and 20-5 overall while NSU fell to 3-9 in the league and 5-18 overall.
The Spartans got on the board first with a jumper by senior Batavia Owens with 18:30 left in the first half to make the score 2-0. This was NSU's only lead of the game.
Olivia Allen nailed a jumper at the other end to cap a 16-0 run with 11:54 remaining before halftime to give the Lady Pirates a 16-2 lead over the Spartans. Allen led all scorers with 26 points and four rebounds.
NSU answered with a pair of back-to-back jumpers from junior Aivah Parham with 11:08 to go in the first half, but the Spartans continued to trail Hampton, 16-6.
Nicole Hamilton drained a 3-pointer with 10:19 left before halftime to spark a 10-1 run as the Lady Pirates continued to lead NSU, 26-7.
The Spartans responded with an 8-0 run as Parham nailed another jumper with 4:34 remaining in the first half to cut Hampton's lead to nine as NSU trailed, 26-15.
The Lady Pirates finished the first half on a 13-1 run sparked by a jumper by Alyssa Bennett with 3:38 left. Nicole Hamilton completed the run as she drained a jumper with six seconds left to send Hampton into halftime with a 39-16 lead over the Spartans.
The 16 points NSU scored in the first half is the fourth time this season that the Spartans were held under 20 points in a half. NSU was also held under 20 points against Radford (19), Hofstra (18), and Virginia (6).
Sophomore Ebony Brown got things started offensively with a layup with 19:40 remaining in the game, but the Spartans still trailed Hampton, 39-18.
The Lady Pirates responded with a made layup by Keiara Avant that sparked an 8-2 run to make the score 47-20 with 16:30 left in the second half.
After more than three minutes, NSU scored with a layup by Parham with 16:01 to go in the game. The Spartans trailed Hampton, 47-22.
Allen made a jumper with 10:47 remaining in the half to cap a 15-4 run as the Lady Pirates continued to lead NSU, 62-26.
The Spartans would not go away without a fight as sophomore Quineshia Leonard capped a 10-2 run as she made the layup with 5:53 left in the game to make the score 64-36.
The Lady Pirates led by as many as 42 points when JoNiquia Guilford drained a 3-pointer with 2:23 left to make the score 80-38. Hampton shot 23.5 (4-of-17) from behind the arc on the night.
Junior Rachel Gordon scored NSU's last field-goal of the game as she hit a jumper with 43 seconds remaining.
Hampton shot 50.0 (32-of-64) percent on the night. Aside from Allen, the Lady Pirates had four other players reach double-figures including Avant, who finished the night with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Hamilton had 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Alyssa Bennett also contributed 12 points and four assists on the night.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 30.2 (16-of-53) percent from the field. Parham led NSU with nine points and three rebounds. Gordon tallied seven points and six rebounds while Brown added six points, respectively.
The Lady Pirates outscored the Spartans in the paint, 38-16, and outscored them 37-9 on points off turnovers. Both NSU and Hampton finished the game with 37 rebounds.
NSU returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State at Memorial Hall. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
