Spartans Take on Morgan State on Monday

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team take on Morgan State on Monday Feb. 4 at the Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md.  Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Spartans (3-16, 1-7) suffered a 79-49 loss to Coppin State on Feb. 2 at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Md. The Spartans were held to just 29.8 (17-of-57) percent shooting on the afternoon. Batavia Owens recorded her first double-double of the season as she led NSU with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Aside from Owens, Rachel Gordon was the only other Spartan in double-figures as she finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Eagles shot 41.2 (28-of-68) percent from the field. Three Coppin State players reached double-figures including Leola Spotwood, who led all scorers with 17 points. Shawntae Payne tallied 12 points and five assists while Janelle Lane added 11 points and five rebounds.

Coppin State outscored the Spartans 34-24 in the paint. The Lady Eagles also outscored NSU, 20-13 on second chance points.

All-Time Series: NSU leads the series with Morgan State, 16-12. The Spartans defeated Morgan State 81-68 on Jan. 21.

About Morgan State: The Lady Bears (6-15, 3-5) are coming off of a 81-60 loss to Hampton on Feb. 2 at Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md. Morgan State shot 32.8 (20-of-61) percent from the floor while the Lady Pirates finished the game shooting 47.9 (34-of-71) percent. Chyress Lockhart led the Lady Bears with 16 points and five rebounds. Aside from Lockhart, two other Morgan State players scored in double-figures. Tracey Carrington and Bianca Jarrett added 13 points each.

Last Time Against Morgan State:  The Spartans snapped a six-game losing streak with an 81-68 victory over Morgan State on Jan. 21 at Joseph Echols Hall. Junior Aivah Parham had a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds to lead NSU. It was Parham's first double-double of the season. Junior Rachel Gordon also tied her career-best with 25 points and 12 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season.

NSU shot 40.0 (26-of-65) percent from the floor on the night while the Lady Bears were held to 30.8 (20-of-65) percent shooting. NSU outrebounded Morgan State 50-38 and outscored the Lady Bears in the paint 30-10.

Three players scored in double-figures for Morgan State. Brianna Coardes led the Lady Bears with 18 points. Bianca Jarrett added 13 points and five rebounds while Whitney Southerland posted 11 points, respectively.

Scoring Leaders: Rachel Gordon leads NSU in scoring averaging 10.1 points per game followed by Kashay Barnes, who is averaging 9.2 points per game.

MEAC, NCAA Leaderboard: As a team NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in six different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players also rank in the top 5 in six different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounding at 10.6 boards per game.  Gordon also currently ranks 21st in the NCAA in rebounding.  Recca Trice is second in the league for assists and is ranked 30th in the nation in assists per games.

Cracking the top 10: Recca Trice's three assists in the game against Hampton on Jan. 26 moved her into fifth place all-time in the NSU record book for career assists. Trice has 103 assists on the season and her 435 career assists puts her seven away from tying Norma Moore for fourth all-time.

Rachel Gordon's eight rebounds in the game against Coppin State on Jan. 19 moved her into 11th place all-time in the NSU record book for career rebounds. Gordon has 170 rebounds on the season and her 637 career rebounds puts her 74 away from tying Andrea Watts for 10th all-time.
