Spartans Hold Off Delaware State, 61-51

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Rachel Gordon posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Norfolk State women's basketball team to a 61-51 victory over Delaware State on Saturday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Spartans (4-17, 2-8) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win against the Lady Hornets. Delaware State fell to 5-3 in the conference and 8-13 overall.

The Lady Hornets scored first with jumper by Jade Washington with 19:38 remaining in the first half.

NSU responded with a jumper on the other end from Gordon with 18:52 left before halftime to knot the score at 2.

Tasia Bristow got the layup with 15:43 remaining in the first half, but Delaware State trailed the Spartans, 6-4. Bristow led all scorers with 24 points.

Sophomore Ebony Brown nailed a jumper to cap a 13-7 run by the Spartans as they continued to lead, 19-11, with 8:19 to go before halftime.

Morgan Woodruff made a pair of free throws with 3:00 remaining in the first half to bring the Lady Hornets within five as they trailed, 24-19.

NSU dominated in the paint as junior Aivah Parham got the layup with eight seconds left to send the Spartans into halftime with a 34-24 lead over Delaware State.

Gordon got things started for NSU in the second half with a layup to make the score 36-24 with 19:28 remaining in the game.

Five minutes into the second half, the Lady Hornets finally scored a bucket with a jumper by Bristow with 14:55 to go. Delaware State continued to trail 36-26.

The Spartans led by as many as 13 points in the second half as junior Kashay Barnes drained a jumper with 11:51 left to give NSU a 43-30 lead.

Bristow continued to lead the Lady Hornets' effort as she answered with a jumper on the other end with 10:29 to go as Delaware State continued to trail NSU, 43-34.

Parham made another layup with 5:58 left in the game to give the Spartans a 50-39 lead over the Lady Hornets.

Bristow made a pair of free throws with 2:24 remaining in regulation to cap an 8-3 run by Delaware State, but it was not enough to overcome NSU as they trailed, 53-47. The Lady Hornets never led in the second half.

Senior Recca Trice scored the last points of the game as she nailed a jumper with seven seconds left. She scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Trice also finished the night with six rebounds, nine assists and five steals.

Delaware State shot 34.6 (18-of-52) percent on the night. Bristow was the only player to score in double-figures for the Lady Hornets.  Tierra Hawkins posted nine points and nine rebounds.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.2 (23-of-52) percent from the field. Aside from Gordon and Trice, two other Spartans posted double-figures. Parham and senior Batavia Owens tallied 12 points and six rebounds each. This was Owens' third consecutive double-figure scoring game.

The Spartans return to action on Monday as they face Maryland Eastern Shore at Joseph Echols Hall. The game begins at 6 p.m.
