Bethune Women's Tennis Tops NSU, 6-1

– The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped its third straight match Saturday afternoon, taking a 6-1 defeat against Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Southern Division Roundup.

The Spartans dropped to 3-4 overall, 1-3 in the MEAC with the loss. B-CU improved to 6-3, 1-0.

B-CU got victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to win the doubles point. Chinatsu Kajiwara and Gaby Chinchilla beat Laura Gutierrez and Yvonne Kamegne 8-4 at No. 1, while Ancia Ifill and Maria Dimitrova bested Rebecca Graff and Kia Batiste by an 8-1 count at No. 3 to take the doubles point.

The Wildcats proceeded to take five of the six singles matches to earn the win. NSU's lone win came via Mafalda Lhorca at No. 4. She was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) straight-set winner over Victoria Galyaeva.

At No. 1, Kajiwara beat Andrea Macchiavello 6-3, 6-0, one of three straight-set B-CU wins. Chinchilla topped Gutierrez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Ifill beat Maryna Kariuk 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5.

Two Spartans battled to three-set losses. Kia Batiste took the first set from Victoria Beresiarte 6-4 at No. 6, but Beresiarte won the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0 to rally for the win. At No. 2, Kamegne topped Dimitrova 6-4 in the first set, before Dimitrova squared the match with a 6-4 second-set win. Dimitrova then won the third set super tie-breaker 10-6 to claim the victory.

The Spartans face Florida A&M at 10 a.m. Monday in their next matchup in the Roundup.
