Florida A&M Claims 4-1 Victory over NSU

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis suffered a 4-1 loss to Florida A&M, on Monday afternoon.

NSU fell to 1-4 in the conference and 3-5 overall.

Sophomore Laura Gutierrez posted NSU's only singles win of the afternoon as she defeated Elysia Ortiz, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles position. Gutierrez also paired with sophomore Yvonne Kamegne in the No. 2 doubles matches, where they claimed an 8-4 win over Ortiz and Stephanie Miller.

The Spartans went 3-0 in the doubles matches. Mafalda Lhorca and freshman Andrea Macchiavello led off with a 5-8 loss to Bethany Holt and Symone Townsend. Victoria Williams and Alexis Dean upended sophomore Kia Batiste and junior Maryna Kariuk in the No. 3 slot.

In the No. 1 singles match, Holt defeated Kamegne, 6-4, 6-4. Macchiavello competed at the No. 2 spot, where she suffered a 2-6, 1-6 loss to Dean. At the No. 3 position, Townsend claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lhorca.  The No. 5 match between Kariuk and V. Williams was abandoned, 3-6, 3-5. Senior Rebecca Graff's match against S. Williams was abandoned 6-2, 2-6.

NSU will close out the MEAC Southern Division Round-up on Tuesday when as they face Savannah State. Play begins at 9 a.m.
