FLORENCE, S.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team posted a 4-1 win over Savannah State, as well as a 7-0 sweep of Benedict on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening match, NSU (5-5, 2-4) competed against Savannah State (2-7, 0-5) as part of the MEAC Southern Division Round-up. Yvonne Kamegne and Laura Gutierrez defeated Sandra Kristjansdottir and Nicole Ashiedu, 8-0, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 spot, Andrea Macchiavello and Mafalda Lhorca posted an 8-3 win over Esmira Gheisary and Andrea Pavlovic. Maryna Kariuk and Rebecca Graff completed the sweep for NSU with an 8-0 win over Tiffany Williams and Davita Washington.

In the singles matches, NSU continued their winnings ways as Macchiavello posted a 6-0, 6-0, win over Gheisary in the No. 2 match. In the No. 4 slot, Lhorca claimed a 6-2, 6-2, win over Ashiedu. Rebecca Graff competed in the match No. 5, where she defeated Williams, 6-0, 6-0. Three of the singles matches were abandoned after NSU earned four points. In the No. 1 singles Kamegne's match against Kristjansdottir was abandoned, 6-2, 1-1. Gutierrez was up 6-2, 5-1, over Pavlovic at the No. 3 slot. Batiste played at No.6, where she was up 6-2, 4-1, over Washington.

Benedict fell to 1-5 overall with loss to NSU. Kamegne and Gutierrez led off for the Spartans and captured an 8-1 win over Glory Zhou and Jessica Carswell. In the No. 2 match, Macchiavello and Lhorca posted an 8-0 win over Chloe Jean-Charles and Belinda Camacho. Batiste and Graff closed out the doubles matches with an 8-1 victory over Darnel Howlett and Keneisha Whittington.

In the singles matches, Kamegne got things started with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Zhou. Macchiavello played at the No. 2 spot, where she upended Jean-Charles, 6-0, 6-0. Gutierrez claimed a 6-0, 6-0, win over Camacho in the No. 3 match. Lhorca defeated Carswell, 6-0, 6-0, in match No. 4. In the No. 5 singles match, Kariuk downed Whittington, 6-2, 6-0. Batiste competed in the final singles match, where she shutout Howlett, 6-0, 6-0.

The Spartans will take a two week break and will return to the courts on March 20 to take on Virginia Union in Norfolk, Va. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
