PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins as they swept Coppin State, 4-0, as well as Maryland Eastern Shore, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon.
In the opening match, NSU (9-7) claimed the victory against Coppin State (0-12) in singles play. Freshman Andrea Macchiavello posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Katherine Chisholm. In match two, sophomore Laura Gutierrez defeated Ashley Milo, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Yvonne Kamegne competed at the No. 3 spot where she upended Miranda Taylor, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Rebecca Graff won by default in match six because Coppin State did not have enough players.
Two of the singles matches were not finished because the match was the first to four points. Mafalda Lhorca was up 6-1, 1-0 over Lauretta Mukam, while Maryna Kariuk led Jennifer Mitchell, 3-1.
The doubles matches were not played because the Spartans earned all four points in the singles matches.
UMES fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss to NSU. The Spartans got things started by claiming the doubles point. Kamegne and Kariuk defeated Valentina Collazos and Reine Fowajuh, 8-0. In match two, Batiste and Graff improved to 3-2 with their 8-0 win against Kenesha Abrams and Jasmine Jennings.
In the singles matches, NSU continued their winnings ways as Kamegne (8-7) defeated Fowajuh 6-0, 6-0 in match one. Lhorca (9-5) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jennings. Kariuk (3-4) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Abrams in match three. Graff improved to 8-3 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Collazos.
The Spartans return to the courts on Sunday to take on Towson at the NSU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. The match will begin at 10 a.m.
