NORFOLK, Va. – The sophomore duo of
Liz Riley and
Alina Moriarty of the Norfolk State softball team pulled in MEAC weekly honors on Monday afternoon. Moriarty was named the conference's Player of the Week, and Riley picked up Pitcher of the Week accolades, as announced by the MEAC office.
Riley and Moriarty led NSU to a 5-0 record on the week. The Spartans defeated North Carolina Central in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, 8-0 and 9-4. They followed that up with a weekend sweep of Delaware State at home, 4-3, 9-1 and 6-0.
Moriarty batted .500 on the week on 10-for-20 hitting. The Chesapeake, Va., native scored nine runs over those five games with one double, three home runs and seven RBI. She went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the final game against Delaware State. Moriarty belted a two-run home run a day earlier in NSU's 4-3 win, helping the Spartans dig out from an early 2-0 hole.
Riley pitched in three games and started two, posting a 0.76 ERA in 18.1 innings of work. She gave up just two earned runs with three walks and 10 strikeouts. The right-hander threw a complete game shutout in the final game of the series with the Hornets, scattering eight hits in seven innings. Riley, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., earned the victory in all three games in which she pitched.
The Spartans maintained first place in the MEAC Northern Division at 14-1 and ran their overall record to 23-18 thanks to a current eight-game win streak.
NSU will return to the field this Wednesday for a doubleheader at George Mason beginning at 4 p.m., the last non-conference games of the year.
