Gardner, Hornets Shut out NSU 7-0

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – Elliott Gardner and George Michael combined to limit Norfolk State to seven hits in the Hornets' 7-0 shutout win over the Spartans in the finale of their three-game series Sunday at Soldier Field.

The Hornets (20-9, 10-2 MEAC North) rebounded from being swept Saturday but outhitting the Spartans 13-7 Sunday to salvage a game in the weekend tilt. Still, the Spartans (11-18, 6-6) wrapped up their third straight MEAC weekend series win with the two victories the day before.

Gardner (3-0) worked 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and walking two while fanning five. Michael worked the final 2.1 innings for his third save of the season. He did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out two.

NSU freshman right hander Cooper Jones (0-4) matched Gardner through three innings before DSU broke through in the fourth. Mike Alexander led off the inning with a single, stole second base, and scored on Hassan Evans' single for the game's first run.

The Hornets added two more in the fifth. Ryan Haas had an RBI single and Cameron Onderko was hit by a pitch by NSU reliever Troy Applin with the bases loaded to account for the two runs. NSU also committed two of its three errors in the frame.

DSU tacked on one more in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game away. Aaron Nardone hit a run-scoring double in the seventh and Haas did likewise in the eighth.

Alexander went 4-for-5 with three steals for the Hornets. Haas, Nardone, Cameron Cecil and J.P. Frey added two hits each for DSU. Haas drove in two runs and scored two more.

Tyon Ore went 2-for-3 and was the only Spartan with more than one hit. Jones took the loss after allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, in four-plus innings.

NSU travels to Williamsburg on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game at William & Mary.
