Charlotte Downs NSU 3-0 to Open Spartan Classic

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Charlotte hit a robust .242 and held the Norfolk State volleyball team to a negative attack percentage in a 3-0 victory over the Spartans Thursday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

The 49ers took the opening contest of the 2013 Spartan Classic, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20, with the trio of Taylor Cannon, Amanda Videmsek and Sarah McDonald providing most of the offense. The Spartans, meanwhile, did themselves in by hitting -.037 overall.

Cannon led all players with 12 kills and hit .625, with Videmsek adding 11 kills and no attack errors on a .478 percentage. Sophomore Janay Frazier had the best line of the night for the Spartans (2-6) with a team-leading seven kills on a .125 attack percentage.

The Spartans played their best ball of the night in the opening set, rallying from an early 7-2 deficit to eventually take a 9-8 lead – thanks to a 7-1 run – after a pair of errors on Charlotte (4-4). The Spartans called timeout after a 5-0 run by Charlotte, but NSU got back into the set. Frazier had four kills in that opening stanza, and NSU got to within two at 22-20 before McDonald added two kills late in the set.

McDonald had nine kills for the match. Cannon, Videmsek and McDonald combined for 32 of the team's 36 kills on the night.

A couple of 4-0 runs early in the second set for the 49ers put them up by six, and a little later a 6-0 run pushed their lead to double digits. NSU got some offense late in the set before Charlotte closed out the deal.

The Spartans were down 5-0 in the third but got to within one twice, the first time at 8-7 thanks to a service ace from junior Adriana Ramos. Jankauskaite had a kill and solo block a little later to again get Norfolk State to within one, 12-11. After a 6-1 run by the 49ers, a couple errors on Charlotte and a kill and service ace from sophomore Jessica Johnson made it 18-16 in favor of the visitors.

NSU, though, was unable to string together back-to-back points the rest of the way.

Britney Leigh Held dished out 33 assists for Charlotte, which also had a 9-2 advantage in blocks. Redshirt junior Noelle Eagles led NSU with 11 digs.

The Spartans will play Bethune-Cookman Friday at 6 p.m., and UMES and Charlotte will also play beforehand at 4 during the second day of the tournament.
