William & Mary Topples NSU, 3-0

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by Dessi Koleva's 14 kills and 12 digs, William & Mary defeated the Norfolk State volleyball team, 3-0, on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup.

A year after NSU won its first-ever match in the all-time series, the Tribe rebounded to defeat the Spartans, 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 at Kaplan Arena.

Liz Brown added 10 kills for the Tribe (4-7), who pulled away from the Spartans midway through each of the three sets.

In the third, several errors on the Tribe allowed NSU (4-7) to take an early lead. After William & Mary got the lead back, the Spartans went up 14-12 thanks to a pair of kills from sophomore Janay Frazier. The Tribe called timeout and immediately went on a 13-2 run to finish the match.

Frazier led NSU with eight kills while hitting .333. Senior Goda Jankauskaite added seven kills.

Kills from Frazier and sophomore Jessica Johnson in the first set allowed NSU to go up, 10-7. Johnson's service ace a little later made it 13-12 in favor of the Spartans, but from there the Tribe started to string together several points in a row.

William & Mary eventually took a 22-17 lead, and NSU got no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Koleva added several kills early in the second set as the Tribe won 10 of the first 16 points. The Spartans threw down several kills, the last by Frazier, to get as close as 14-13. A service ace from freshman Alex Irizarry made it 16-15 William & Mary, but a 5-0 run allowed the Tribe to pull away.

Sophomore setter Darcy Moore led all players with 16 digs to go with 29 assists. Redshirt junior Noelle Eagles added 15, and Irizarry contributed nine.

William & Mary hit .236 compared to .062 for NSU.

The Spartans will head to the Villanova Classic this weekend to face Penn, Villanova and Sacred Heart.
