WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Liza Gordeeva picked up NSU's lone win as the Norfolk State women's tennis team ran into some demanding competition over the weekend at the Georgetown Classic.
Gordeeva upended George Washington's Allison Hansen, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Georgetown's Sophie Barnard, 7-5, 6-2.
Ana Jovanovic suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Leah Pascarella of George Washington. Jovanovic withdrew in the next match giving Arina Alileuva of Morgan State the win.
Ana Popovic fell to George Washington's Byrdie O'Connor, 6-2, 6-2. Popovic also suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to George Washington's Isabella Escobar.
The Spartans continued to struggle as Andrea Macchiavello suffered a 7-6(3), 7-5 loss to Egle Jakuciunaite of George Washington, before defeating Escobar, 6-1, 7-5. Macchiavello also fell to Diana Perez, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Mafalda Lhorca fell to Kelly Comolli of Georgetown, 6-0, 6-0, before losing to UMBC's Shannon Cleary, 7-6(3), 5-7, 0-1 (9-11).
Sophomore Yvonne Kamegne had a 6-0, 6-1 loss to George Washington's Lana Robbins. Kamegne also fell to UMBC's Madlena Kurasz, 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Krystal Scott closed things out for the Spartans in the singles competition with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Taylor Nedelander of George Washington. Scott also suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Georgetown's Maddie Foley.
In the doubles competition, Kamegne and Lhorca paired together and fell to George Washington's Pascarella and Stephanie Wie, 8-5. Gordeeva and Macchiavello suffered an 8-2 loss to George Washington's Escobar and Nedelander. Jovanovic paired with Georgetown's Mimi Lynham and they fell to George Washington's Hansen and Christie Carpenter, 8-1.
NSU will compete in the Longwood Classic in Farmville, Va., on Sept. 28-29.
