FARMVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team competed in the Longwood Invitational over the weekend.
The Spartans got things started in the doubles competition. In flight two, sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca defeated Sarah Moomau and Paloma Alatorre of Longwood, 8-6. They also posted an 8-6 victory over North Carolina Central's Lynsey Cover and Mia Ramic.
In flight two, freshman Liza Gordeeva and junior Krystal Scott suffered an 8-2 loss to Longwood's Malin Allgurin and Anna Pelak. Gordeeva and Scott also fell to N.C. Central's Rebecca Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova, 8-4.
Junior Yvonne Kamegne and freshman Ana Popovic closed things out for NSU in flight three of the doubles matches with a 9-8(7-3) loss to Mason Thomas and Bethany Law of Longwood. Kamegne and Popovic also suffered an 8-4 loss N.C. Central's Tamara Jeremic and Aissa Muamba.
Gordeeva led off for the Spartans in singles play, where she fell to Longwood's Allgurin, 6-1, 6-2, before defeating N.C. Central's Muamba, 6-3, 6-2.
In flight two, Macchiavello posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Pelak of Longwood, before falling 6-1, 6-0 to Nekrasova of N.C. Central.
Kamegne competed in flight three, where she defeated Longwood's Alatorre, 6-3, 6-1, before suffering a 6-0, 6-1 loss to N.C. Central's Wood.
In flight four, Scott fell to Longwood's Moomau, 6-2, 6-2 in flight four. Scott also suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Ramic of N.C. Central.
Lhorca competed in flight five, where she fell to Longwood's Thomas, 6-3, 3-6 (10-5), before defeating N.C. Central's Cover, 4-6, 6-0, 13-11.
Popovic fell to Longwood's Law in flight six, 6-2, 6-2, before suffering a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Jeremic of N.C. Central.
NSU will travel to Greenville, N.C., to compete in the East Carolina Invitational on Oct. 4-6.
