NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Rae Corbo tallied 16 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line to help Norfolk State claim a 61-52 victory over Morgan State Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall. This was the Spartans' third straight win and fourth straight conference win.
The win gives NSU (8-8, 4-1) its best start in MEAC play since the 2001-2002 season where the Spartans also started 4-1 in conference play.
The score was tied at 47 with 3:11 to play in the second half and the Spartans used a 14-5 run, which included 10 points from the free throw line, to overtake the Lady Bears (2-of-14, 0-3) in the final minutes of the game. NSU shot a season high 78.6 percent (33-of-42) from the line on the afternoon. Senior Rachel Gordon made 12 and Corbo had 10. Corbo's 10 brings her career total to 237 made free throws, which ties her with Miranda Bryant for eighth all-time in free throws made at NSU.
Gordon's 14 points and 16 rebounds in the game helped her earn her third consecutive double-double. She now has eight double-doubles on the season. Freshman Logan Powell also scored in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. She also had one steal.
Morgan State started the first half on an 8-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from Danielle Robinson with 17:20 to go before halftime. The Lady Bears shot only 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from downtown on the afternoon.
NSU picked things up offensively on a layup from junior Quineshia Leonard with 15:29 on the clock. Corbo capped the 6-0 run for NSU at the free throw line to make the score 8-6 with 14:41 remaining in the half.
The Lady Bears answered on the other end with a three from the corner by Tracey Carrington. LaQuacious Adams knocked down a pair of free throws with 6:10 remaining to give Morgan State a 13-11 lead over the Spartans.
Freshman Kieera Basey nailed a 3-pointer at the 7:01 mark to give NSU its first lead of the game at 14-13. For the game, Basey was 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Despite only shooting 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from the field in the first half, NSU went into the break with a 20-19 lead over Morgan State.
Carrington started things off for the Lady Bears in the second half on a jumper with 19:03 to go in regulation. The Spartans responded with five unanswered points, which included a basket from Corbo and another 3-pointer from Basey with 17:27 on the clock that gave NSU a 25-21 lead.
The Lady Bears regained the lead after Carrington knocked down another shot with 16:03 to play that made the score 28-27. From there junior Ebony Brown made back-to-back layups to give NSU a 31-30 advantage over Morgan State with 13:04 left.
Morgan State's Dinah Jones drove in the lane for a basket to spark a 13-6 run. Carrington closed out the run with a pair of free throws at the 7:37 mark to give the Lady Bears a 43-37 lead over NSU. The Spartans used a 10-4 run with 7:09 on the clock to eventually tie the Lady Bears at 47 and then take the lead for the remainder of the game.
NSU only shot 25.5 percent (13-of-51) from the field for the game and was only 2-of-7 from 3-point range. Basey and Ebony Brown also contributed to the Spartans' scoring effort. Basey tied her career-high of eight points. She also had a team-high three assists. Brown had nine points, and shot 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free throw line.
The Spartans outrebounded Morgan State 48-38 and held the Lady Bears to 27.4 percent (17-of-62) shooting on the afternoon. Carrington led Morgan State in scoring with 22 points. Robinson also finished with double figures for the Lady Bears with 12 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.
The Spartans return to the court on Monday to take on Coppin State. Game time is at 6 p.m. at Joseph Echols Hall.
