NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State posted a 71-52 win over Norfolk State to end the Spartans' three game win streak on Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.
Senior Rachel Gordon and junior Rae Corbo led NSU (8-9, 4-2) with 13 points each. Gordon also grabbed 10 boards to post her fourth straight double-double. She now has nine double-doubles this season.
Ashle Craig led the Lady Eagles (7-10, 4-1) with 27 points on 9-of 13 shooting. She also shot 80 percent (4-of-5) from the free throw line.
The Spartans got on the board first as Gordon knocked down a jumper at the 19:31 mark. Craig answered on the other end with a 3-pointer to spark an 18-4 run for Coppin State. She also ended the run, draining another 3-pointer from the corner to make the score 18-6. 15 of Craig's points came from behind the arc.
After over two minutes without a basket, freshman Logan Powell knocked down a jumper in the paint with 10:09 left before halftime to end the Spartans' scoring drought. Powell finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. NSU continued to trail the Lady Eagles 18-8.
Coppin State led by as many as 15 in the first half after Craig made a layup with 8:56 on the clock. The Lady Eagles led NSU, 23-8.
NSU closed out the half on a 13-10 run, which included eight points from the free throw line. Corbo, Gordon, Powell and freshman Dominique Harper each knocked down free throws in the run for NSU. Corbo made the last field goal of the half for NSU with 2:06 to go as she nailed a 3-pointer to make the score 31-21 in favor of Coppin State.
Kyra Coleman scored the last field goal of the half at the 1:43 mark to send the Lady Eagles into halftime with a 33-21 lead over the Spartans. Coppin State outscored NSU in the paint, 14-4, in the first half.
The second half started just like the first as NSU scored first on a basket from Corbo with 19:53 left in the game. Coppin State's Larissa Carter answered on the other end with a jumper in the paint to move the lead to 35-23.
Powell knocked down her only 3-pointer of the night with 17:58 to go to cut the lead back down to single digits, 35-29. The Spartans shot only 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from 3-point range on the night.
The Lady Eagles led by as many as 26 points in the second half after Coleman made a free throw with 8:47 left that made the score 59-36. Coleman ended the game with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Junior Quineshia Leonard tried to get things going for NSU offensively, scoring six unanswered points. The Spartans continued to trail Coppin State, 59-42, with 6:18 left to play.
Craig drained another 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to give Coppin State its final points of the game. For the game, the Lady Eagles shot 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from downtown.
The Spartans shot only 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the field for the game and was 13-of-19 from the free throw line. Junior Ebony Brown ended the game with seven points, while Leonard totaled six points. Harper rounded out the scoring effort for NSU with three points.
NSU travels to Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday to take on South Carolina State. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at S.M.H. Memorial Center.
