SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State claimed a 79-47 victory over the Norfolk State women's basketball team on Monday afternoon at Tiger Arena. The loss marks NSU's first loss on the road in MEAC play this season.
NSU (9-10, 5-3) shot only 25.0 percent (12-of-48) from the field overall and was 74.2 percent (23-of-31) from the free throw line. Freshman Dominique Harper was the only Spartan to score in double-figures, leading NSU with a season-high 15 points. Junior Rae Corbo had only eight points, ending her double-figure scoring streak at six games. Senior Rachel Gordon finished with six points and five rebounds to end her double-double streak at five games.
The Lady Tigers (12-9, 5-2) got on the board first with a layup from Tiyonda Davis at the 19:34 mark that sparked a 9-2 run. Ezinne Kalu closed out the run with a trio of free throw shots after Corbo fouled her from behind the arc. Kalu shot 90 percent (9-of-10) from the line on the afternoon and led all scorers with 24 points.
After almost three minutes without a field-goal, Harper knocked down a jumper with 14:48 to go before halftime. The Spartans kept within two of Savannah State after freshman Amber Brown made a free throw with 12:53 left in the half to make the score 11-9. NSU never led in the game.
Savannah State answered on the other end with a basket from Kalu, as well as a pair of free throws and a jumper from Charmaine Green. Greene's jumper with 10:42 on the clock gave the Lady Tigers a 17-9 lead over NSU.
Junior Jazamine Gray scored the last field-goal of the half for the Spartans at the 6:46 mark to make the score 25-16. NSU shot only 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from the field in the 20 minutes of the game.
From there Savannah State went on a 14-3 run to go into halftime with a 39-19 lead over the Spartans. The last time NSU failed to score 20 points in a half this season was against Penn on Jan. 5. The Spartans only scored 15 points in the first half against Penn.
Out of the break, Kalu made the first bucket of the half with 19:35 left to play. NSU scored its first 12 points of the half on free throw shots. After over 17 minutes without an NSU field-goal, Harper made a layup in the paint at the 9:20 mark, but Savannah State still led by 30 points with the score at 63-33.
Savannah State's Rhianna Warren drained a 3-pointer on the other end to keep the margin at 30 points, 67-37, with 8:04 left to play. NSU did not attempt any 3-pointers in the game and finished the half with only five more field-goals. Freshman Ronesia Spicer scored the last goal for the Spartans with 2:16 remaining in the game to give NSU its final score.
The Lady Tigers outscored NSU in the paint 30-16 and outrebounded NSU 45-28.
Also scoring in double figures for Savannah State were Kenyatta Hendrix and Bria Dorsey, who scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Tigers shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the field and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free throw line.
NSU has the week off and will return to action on Feb. 8 at Morgan State. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Talmadge Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md.
