Spartans Fall 52-46 at Stony Brook

Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Sabre Proctor notched game highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds as host Stony Brook sent Norfolk State to its fourth straight loss, 52-46, on the second and final day of the Seawolves Holiday Classic on Monday afternoon at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

The Seawolves (7-6) held NSU (2-9) to 30.6 percent shooting from the floor, the main difference in what was a tight game throughout. Stony Brook also held NSU leading scorer Rae Corbo to 6-of-18 shooting, though the Spartans' senior guard still recorded a team-high 19 points.

Just like in their one-point loss to Holy Cross on Sunday, the Spartans got out to an early lead thanks to their defense. NSU forced six SBU turnovers and the Seawolves missed their first eight shots over the first 6:56 of the game. Corbo, meanwhile, scored on a 3-pointer and fast-break layup, and sophomore forward Nia Roberts added a pair of field goals to get NSU out to a 9-0 lead.

However, an Elizabeth Manner layup at the 13:04 mark started a 14-3 run over the next six-plus minutes for Stony Brook. Chris Scognamiglio's 3-pointer capped the spurt and gave the Seawolves a 14-12 edge, their first lead of the game, with 6:52 remaining in the first half.

There were four ties and four lead-changes in the final minutes of the first half. NSU sophomore forward Amber Brown's layup with 23 seconds left in the first half tied the game at 22-all heading into halftime.

The teams weren't separated by more than the game's final margin of six points during the second half, which included five ties and six lead-changes. Proctor scored to give SBU a 24-22 lead on the Seawolves' first possession of the second half, but Corbo scored five straight points to put NSU back in front, 27-24. That would prove to be the Spartans' largest lead of the second half.

NSU took its last lead in the see-saw second half at 38-36 when senior forward Aivah Parham stole the ball from Jessica Ogunnorin and scored on a fast-break layup with 7:27 left to play. The Seawolves answered with four consecutive points before junior guard Brehanna Daniels knotted the score at 40-all with a jumper with 5:44 remaining.

After Daniels' field goal, NSU came up empty on six of its next seven possessions. Ogunnorin responded with jumpers on two straight SBU possessions to give the Seawolves the lead for good, and a Proctor free throw made it 45-40.

The Spartans twice got within three points in the final 1:09. Parham's jumper with 1:09 remaining cut NSU's deficit to 47-44, but Proctor's layup 20 seconds later pushed the edge back to five. Corbo answered with another score for the Spartans, but Kori Bayne-Walker hit 1-of-2 from the foul line to extend SBU's lead to 50-46 with 21 seconds left.

After an NSU turnover, Proctor sealed the outcome with a pair of free throws with two seconds left.

The Spartans shot 19-of-62 from the floor, 2-of-10 from long distance and 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. For the third straight game, Corbo was the only Spartan in double figures. Nia Roberts contributed a season-high nine points to go with a team-leading eight rebounds and three steals. Parham and freshman forward Kayla Roberts scored six points apiece off the bench, while senior guard Jazamine Gray had a team-best four assists.

The Spartans stuck around thanks to 18 offensive rebounds, which led to a 15-8 edge in second-chance points.

Stony Brook shot only slightly better, hitting on 18-of-46 (39.1 percent) and an identical 2-of-10 from 3-point range. The Seawolves outscored NSU 14-6 from the free-throw line and attempted 16 more free throws than did the Spartans.

In addition to Proctor's big game, Brittany Snow scored 11 points and Scognamiglio 10 for SBU.

The Spartans are back on the road Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. The game can be viewed live on ESPN3.
