CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 6 UNC-Chapel Hill on Wednesday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Tar Heels improve to 7-2 overall.
Freshman Liza Gordeeva and junior Yvonne Kamegne fell to Kate Vialle and Laura Slater, 8-0, at the No. 2 doubles spot. In the No. 3 doubles position, junior Krystal Scott and freshman Marie Habiyaremye suffered an 8-1 loss to Caroline Price and Tessa Lyons. Freshman Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca competed at the No. 1 spot and were down 6-1 to Jamie Loeb and Ashley Dai before the match was abandoned. Play was abandoned because the Tar Heels claimed the doubles point.
NSU continued to struggle in singles competition. Loeb defeated Gordeeva, 6-3, 6-1. Kamegne fell to Price, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Macchiavello suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Vialle. Lyons upended Lhorca, 6-1, 6-3. Dai posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Habiyaremye. Slater finished things off for the Tar Heels at the No. 6 position, defeating Scott 6-1, 6-0.
The Spartans will take on Christopher Newport University and North Carolina Central this weekend. NSU will play CNU on Saturday and N.C. Central on Sunday. Both matches start at 12 p.m. at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va.
