NSU Continues Road Swing at Howard on Monday

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. – The Spartans are looking to snap their three-game losing streak on Monday when they face the Howard Lady Bison. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.

Media Coverage: Due to technical difficulties the game will not be broadcast on Hot 91.1 FM. There will be a free live audio broadcast here. Live stats will not be available for the game against Howard.

All-Time Series: Howard leads the series with NSU, 29-9.

Moving Up the Charts: Rachel Gordon is in second place all-time in career rebounding at NSU with 998 rebounds. She needs three more boards to pass Sharon Wallace for first place.

Scoring Leaders: Rae Corbo leads NSU in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game followed by Rachel Gordon, who is averaging 12.0 points per game. Ebony Brown rounds out the top-three scoring leaders for NSU, averaging 9.0 points per game.

Breaking 1,000 Points: Rae Corbo has 947 career points at NSU. She needs only 53 more to become a member of the "1,000 Point Club" at NSU. Rachel Gordon has 939 career points and needs only 61 more to break 1,000.

NCAA, MEAC Leaderboard: Rachel Gordon currently ranks No. 7 in the nation in rebounds per game and Rae Corbo is No. 64 in free throw percentage.

Gordon ranked 16th in career rebounding among active players through Feb. 16. She also ranks 10th in career rebounding average at 9.7. Corbo ranked 36th in career free throw percentage among active players through Feb. 16.

As a team, NSU currently ranks in the top 5 in eight different categories in the MEAC, while NSU players rank in the top 5 in five different categories, including Rachel Gordon, who leads the league in rebounds, averaging 12.5 rebounds per game.

Last Time Out: Senior Rachel Gordon was the only Spartan to score in double figures as Norfolk State dropped its third straight game of the season in a 63-51 loss to Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.

Gordon led NSU (10-13, 6-6) with 13 points. She also tallied seven rebounds.

The Spartans closed out the game outscoring Coppin State, 11-9. Seven of the last 11 points of the game for the Spartans came from the free throw line. NSU finished the game shooting 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the line.

For the game, the Spartans shot 25.4 percent (15-of-59) from the floor and they failed to make a 3-pointer (0-of-9). Freshmen Logan Powell and Koryn Lawrence finished the game with nine and five points each, respectively. Powell also had seven rebounds. Sisters Ebony Brown and freshman Amber Brown tallied five points each. Amber Brown also had a season-high of nine rebounds. Junior Rae Corbo and freshman Dominique Harper each added four points.

Coppin State shot 28.6 percent (18-of-63) overall, including 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from three. The Lady Eagles were 26-of-38 from the free throw line. Kyra Coleman led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lane and Craig each added 12 points.

About Howard: Howard (10-15, 6-6) is coming off of a 58-52 loss to Hampton on Saturday at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. For the game, the Lady Bison shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the field and was 3-of-8 from 3-point range. Howard also shot 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free throw line. Te'Shya Heslip led Howard with 11 points and nine rebounds. Victoria Gonzalez also scored in double figures for the Lady Bison, finishing the night with 10 points.

On the season, Howard is averaging 59.2 points and 38.2 rebounds per game. Heslip leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game. Gonzalez is second in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game.

Last Time Against Howard: In the first meeting this season, the Howard Lady Bison downed Norfolk State, 77-63, on Feb. 10 at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU was paced by junior Rae Corbo, who finished the game with 17 points. Freshman Logan Powell scored 14 to tie her season-high, while senior Rachel Gordon chipped in 10. Gordon also tallied 13 rebounds to claim her 12th double-double of the season.

For the game, Howard shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) from the field, while limiting the Spartans to 34.9 percent (22-of-63) shooting. The Lady Bison also controlled the boards with a 47-39 advantage. Howard finished the game shooting 69.0 percent (20-of-29) from the line. For the game, NSU shot only 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the free throw line.

The Lady Bison had four players score in double figures, including Cheyenne Brown, who led all scorers with 21 points. Shavonne Duckett contributed 16, Te'Shya Heslip tallied 12 and Victoria Gonzalez added 10.
