NSU Opens MEAC Play with a 7-0 Win Over N.C. A&T

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team opened MEAC play with a 7-0 victory against North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon at Oak Hollow Tennis Center.

The Spartans (1-1, 1-0) started the match with the doubles competition. In the No. 1 slot, sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca teamed up to defeat Kenya Colbert and Jayla Scott, 8-3. Junior Krystal Scott and freshman Liza Gordeeva posted an 8-1 victory over Kimberly Stalling and Saundra Smith. The Lady Aggies defaulted the No. 3 doubles because they only had five players.

NSU continued to its winning ways in singles play. Gordeeva topped Colbert, 6-3, 6-0. Macchiavello followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Scott. On court number three, junior Yvonne Kamegne posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Stalling. Lhorca competed at the No. 4 spot, where she upended Smith, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Marie Habiyaremye finished the afternoon off for the Spartans with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lexxus Betts. N.C. A&T defaulted at the No. 6 position because they did not have enough players.

Up next for the Spartans is a match against Hampton on Feb. 14. The contest will be held at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, Va., with play set to begin at 9 a.m.
