S.C. State Tops NSU, 6-1

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Freshman Liza Gordeeva picked up the Spartans' only win in their 6-1 loss to South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Courts.

NSU is now 1-2 in conference play and 3-4 overall.

Gordeeva defeated Oleksandra Flippova, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(3) at the No. 1 singles position. Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello fell to Klara Dohanlova, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6. In the No. 3 spot, junior Yvonne Kamegne suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Victoriia Khatcei. Junior Mafalda Lhorca fell to Intissar Rassif, 6-1, 6-0. S.C. State's Marketa Marcanikova upended junior Krystal Scott, 6-1, 6-0. Closing out the singles competition for NSU was freshman Marie Habiyaremye. She fell to Dakota Brown, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, Macchiavello and Lhorca fell to Dohanlova and Rassif, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, Gordeeva and Scott suffered an 8-1 loss to Khatcei and Marcanikova. Flippova and Nynke Van Der Goot were up 6-3 before play was abandoned.

The Spartans will face Savannah State on March 8 in the MEAC Southern Division Roundup. This year's roundup is scheduled for March 8-10 in Florence, S.C.
