NORFOLK, Va. – Both Mafalda Lhorca and Ana Popovic picked up wins in singles play as the Norfolk State women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to NJIT on Thursday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Spartans are now to 4-7 overall, while the Highlanders improve to 5-5 on the season.
Lhorca competed at the No. 4 position and posted a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(4) win against Natalia Melibeu. Popovic defeated Megan Guidry, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
NJIT's Ksenia Kuzmenko posted a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory against Liza Gordeeva in the No. 1 slot. Andrea Macchiavello competed at the No. 2 position, where she fell to Jana Luste, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 3 singles, Yvonne Kamegne lost to Nathalie Habegger, 6-4, 6-2. Carolina Zanotta upended Krystal Scott at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-1.
The Highlanders took the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Zanotta and Melibeu defeated Scott and Lhorca, 8-4. Habegger and Guidry posted an 8-6 win over Kamegne and Marie Habiyaremye. Macchiavello and Gordeeva were down 7-4 to Kuzmenko and Luste in the No. 1 slot before the match was abandoned.
The Spartans return to action on March 25 at Chowan. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the Chowan Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, N.C.
