NSU Sweeps Chowan, 9-0

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory against Chowan on Wednesday afternoon at the CU Tennis Complex.

NSU (5-7, 2-4) opened the match with doubles play. Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and freshman Liza Gordeeva claimed an 8-4 win against Natalya Kamenshchikova at the No. 1 spot. Juniors Krystal Scott and Mafalda Lhorca competed in the No. 2 position, where they defeated Breanne Johnson and Natalia Andrade, 8-1. Junior Yvonne Kamegne and freshman Marie Habiyaremye closed out the doubles competition with an 8-1 win over Jennifer Humphrey and Jessica De Backre.

The Spartans continued to play aggressively in the singles sets. Gordeeva led off with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Kamenshchikova. Macchiavello posted a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(8) win over Johnson. Kamegne competed at the No. 3 spot, where she claimed a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(7) win against Holly Stambaugh. Lhorca upended De Backre, 6-0, 6-0. Scott also posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Andrade. Freshman Ana Popovic rounded out singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Straffai Cleveland.

NSU will take on Maryland Eastern Shore and Coppin State on Friday. Both matches will be played at the Everett Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan. The contest against UMES is set to start at 10 a.m., while the match against CSU is scheduled for 1 p.m.
