Spartans Set to Compete in MEAC Southern Division Roundup

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team is looking to get back on the winning track this weekend at the MEAC Southern Division Roundup in Florence, S.C. The Spartans will face Savannah State, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.

The Spartans (3-4, 1-2) suffered a 6-1 loss at South Carolina State on March 1 at the Bulldog Courts in Orangeburg, S.C. Freshman Liza Gordeeva picked up the Spartans' only win as she defeated Oleksandra Flippova, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(3) at the No. 1 singles position.

Savannah State (3-6, 0-1) is coming off of a 7-0 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, as well as a 7-0 loss to Campbell University on Wednesday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Florida A&M (1-5, 0-0) fell to Mercer, 4-3, on Feb. 28. Dominique Henry and Elysia Ortiz picked up wins in singles play. Henry also posted a win in doubles play with teammate Alexis Dean. The Lady Rattlers secured the doubles point as Shantal Blackwood and Arrice Robinson paired up at the No. 3 spot and overtook Mercer's Liza Klyachkin and Amanda Bertani, 8-5.

Bethune-Cookman (6-7, 1-0) posted a 5-2 victory over Campbell University, as well as a 7-0 win against Savannah State on Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Fla. B-CU's Chinatsu Kajiwara and Maria Sablina won all four of their matches in singles and doubles play in the contests against Campbell and SSU.

NSU will face Savannah State on Saturday and FAMU on Sunday. Both matches are set for 3 p.m. The Spartans will close out the MEAC Southern Division Roundup against B-CU on Monday at 10 a.m.
