NSU Suffers 7-0 Loss to South Alabama

NORFOLK, Va. – The women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to South Alabama on Thursday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.

NSU (7-9) has dropped their second-straight match. South Alabama is now 12-1 on the season.

The Jaguars claimed the doubles point after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Laura Valkova and Monica Mitta posted an 8-2 win against Yvonne Kamegne and Mafalda Lhorca. Ana Popovic and Marie Habiyaremye fell to Laura Matuskova and Paula Sanchez, 8-0. Liza Gordeeva and Krystal Scott were down 6-2 against Emily Newton and Michaela Meszarosova before the match was abandoned.

Gordeeva, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Wednesday, led off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Valkova. Lhorca competed at the No. 2 spot, where she suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Newton. Mitta defeated Kamegne in the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-0. Scott fell to Matuskova, 6-0, 6-0. Mary Angela Martin claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Popovic in the No. 5 spot. Habiyaremye closed out the competition with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Sanchez.

NSU's match with Randolph-Macon that was scheduled for Friday has been ruled a default win in favor of the Spartans. Up next for NSU is a contest against Richmond on April 12 in Richmond, Va. Play starts at noon.
