Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. –
Rae Corbo scored a game-high 25 points and
Kayla Roberts added 19 points and nine rebounds to propel Norfolk State over Morgan State, 64-56, on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
Â
The win moves the Spartans to 9-14 overall, 8-4 in the MEAC and finishes off their season sweep of MSU (9-15, 6-5).
Â
NSU's recent formula for success paid off again Saturday, with Corbo and Roberts leading the way offensively and the Spartans using a strong effort on the boards and on defense to secure the win. The Spartans outrebounded MSU 47-28 and held the Lady Bears to 35 percent shooting.
Â
NSU never trailed. The Spartans forced seven turnovers and MSU missed eight of its first 10 shots while NSU sprinted out to a 19-5 lead midway through the first half. Roberts scored 10 of NSU's first 19 points and had 14 altogether in the first half.
Â
The Spartans led 23-8 with eight minutes left in the first half, but the Lady Bears clawed their way back into it. NSU went cold late in the half, as a Corbo 3-pointer with 5:03 left in the half proved to be the Spartans' last field goal of the stanza. A Tracey Carrington 3-pointer and an inside basket by Lexus Spears brought MSU within 28-22 going into the half.
Â
A Carrington layup with 17:55 left cut Morgan State's deficit to 29-27. But that would be as close as the Lady Bears would get as Corbo fueled the Spartans in the second half. She and Roberts both hit 3-pointers in a 10-0 NSU run immediately after Carrington's field goal, pushing NSU's advantage back to 12.
Â
MSU couldn't get closer than six after that point, on Tykyrah Williams' 3-pointer that made it 56-50 with 3:18 left. Corbo helped bring the victory home for NSU, hitting all four of her free throws and scoring a layup late to clinch the win. Corbo scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half.
Â
Corbo and Roberts combined to shoot 7-of-11 from 3-point range. NSU shot 37.7 percent from the floor and 77 percent (17-of-22) from the free-throw line.
Â
In addition to Roberts' nine rebounds,
Amber Brown grabbed eight and
Koryn Lawrence added seven.
Jazamine Gray handed out a team-high five assists and Lawrence had four.
Â
Carrington, the Lady Bears' leading scorer, had 18 points but shot just 6-of-22. Braennan Farrar added 14 points.
Â
The Spartans are off for a week before traveling back to Baltimore to face Coppin State next Saturday at 2 p.m.
