Box Score 2 BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Norfolk State volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 losses on Saturday afternoon in the Campbell Invitational. The host Camels upended NSU in an early afternoon matchup at Gore Arena, and UNC Wilmington followed with another sweep of the Spartans in a late afternoon contest.
Campbell won the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-17 before NSU gave the Camels a run for their money in a 26-24 loss in the third set. UNC Wilmington took care of the Spartans via scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-17 in the second matchup.
The losses dropped NSU to 0-6 on the year.
Against Campbell, senior
Angie Darcus led all players with 10 kills. She also led the Spartans with seven kills against UNC Wilmington and tallied 11 digs, two assists, two service aces and two blocks over the course of both matches.
Campbell (3-3) led 5-1 to start the match and later went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead by double digits. After winning the last five points of the first set, the Camels then took a 7-4 lead to start the second. Darcus had a kill and a block to tie it up at 8-8. The Spartans led at 10-9 after a pair of errors on Campbell, which then used a 7-1 run and a larger 14-4 spurt to again pull past NSU.

Janay Frazier and Darcus to go ahead by a 9-5 score. A 10-2 run for the Camels put them ahead by four, but NSU chipped away and got to within 20-19 on back-to-back kills from Frazier.

Uwem Etuk made it 24-23 in favor of the Spartans. The Camels, though, used two kills and an error on NSU to win the next three points to close out the contest.
In the late afternoon match, UNC Wilmington (5-1) broke an 8-8 tie in the first set with a 12-0 run to cruise to a first set win. The Spartans stayed with the Seahawks in the second set, getting to within one as late as 11-10 on a Darcus service ace. UNC Wilmington methodically pulled away from there, including taking the last four points for the seven-point victory.
The run extended to 10-0 after the Seahawks won the first six points of the third set. The Spartans did not back down, however. Darcus had three kills within a five serve span, and a block by Forsythe and Etuk tied it at 12-12. NSU was still within one at 16-15 after kills by Forsythe and Darcus, but UNC Wilmington closed the match on a 9-2 run.
The Spartans hit .053 against Campbell, which hit .253 and outscored NSU 8-3 in service aces. UNC Wilmington, meanwhile, posted a .291 attack percentage while holding the Spartans to a .042 clip. The Seahawks also held the advantage in blocks, 9-4.
Frazier finished with 11 kills over the two matches, while Moore tallied 38 assists, 11 digs and six kills. Junior
Alex Irizarry ended the day with 19 digs, five assists and two service aces, and Etuk had a solid day with seven kills and four blocks in the first significant minutes of her career.
NSU will compete in the Spartan-Aggie Invitational next Friday and Saturday, hosted by UNCG and North Carolina A&T.
