Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Aprill McRae recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, and host North Carolina A&T scored 26 points off 28 Norfolk State turnovers in a 64-53 Lady Aggies' win on Monday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.
Christina Carter added 10 points for the Aggies (8-9, 4-2 MEAC), who held NSU (0-16, 0-6) to 34.5 percent shooting. Senior guard
Brehanna Daniels scored a career-high 12 points and sophomore forward
Kayla Roberts also had 12 for the Spartans.
Both teams shot better than 45 percent in the opening quarter, which ended with the Lady Aggies on top, 16-14. The Spartans went cold in the second quarter, however. Junior guard
Koryn Lawrence brought NSU within 25-23 on a layup with 6:14 left in the period. But that was NSU's last field goal of the half. A&T outscored the Spartans 11-1 over the final six minutes of the half, with Carter scoring on a fast-break layup just before the buzzer after a steal by Kala Green, to send the Lady Aggies into the half with a 36-24 advantage.
The Spartans managed just one field goal in the first five and a half minutes of the third quarter as A&T stretched its lead to 42-26. The Spartans were able to cut their deficit to eight on two occasions. Junior
Kiara Phillips hit a fast-break jumper to cut A&T's lead to 44-36 late in the third. With NSU trailing by 10 to start the fourth, Daniels scored on a put-back 31 seconds into the period to make it 46-38.
But NSU went nearly seven and a half minutes before hitting their next field goal, a 3-pointer by Roberts that trimmed A&T's lead to 57-45 at the 2:03 mark. In between field goals, NSU missed nine straight shots from the floor and committed three turnovers, managing just four free throws by junior guard
Dominique Harper.
Harper scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter. Freshman guard
Yazmen Hannah added eight points in just 11 minutes of action. Sophomore center
Shayla Tanner had her second straight solid defensive performance, registering career highs in rebounds (nine) and blocks (six) while also finishing with two steals. She now has 10 blocked shots in the last two games.
Roberts also blocked two shots and grabbed eight rebounds for NSU, which topped the Lady Aggies 43-42 on the glass. A&T outscored NSU 36-16 in points in the paint and scored 22 second-chance points.
NSU returns home for its next two games, starting with a 4 p.m. matchup with South Carolina State on Saturday at Echols Hall.
