Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Keena Samuels scored 13 points and Omaah Tayong contributed a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds as Coppin State defeated Norfolk State 69-44 on Monday night at the Physical Education Complex.
Koryn Lawrence scored nine points to lead the Spartans (0-12, 0-2 MEAC), who remain winless on the year.
NSU held just one lead on the evening, at 2-0 after a fast-break by Lawrence just 1:10 into the first quarter. CSU (4-9, 1-0) used an 8-0 run late in the period, fueled by six points from Amber Griffin, to open up an 18-8 lead. NSU was unable to mount a serious threat after that, trailing 32-16 at the half and 52-29 after three quarters.
The Spartans were held to just 32 percent shooting (18-of-56) and committed 20 turnovers, 13 of them in the first half.
Kayla Roberts and
Siobhan Beslow added eight points each for NSU. Beslow snared 10 rebounds for her sixth double-digit rebounding game of the year and second in a row, while Roberts added eight boards. Lawrence was credited with five of NSU's eight steals and also handed out three assists.
Genesis Lucas added 11 points and Griffin 10 for CSU.
The Spartans play their first MEAC home game of the season this Saturday, when they host Florida A&M at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall.
