RICHMOND, Va. – VCU held the Norfolk State volleyball team in check in a 3-0 victory over the Spartans on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at the Siegel Center.
The Rams held NSU to a negative hitting percentage in all three sets in a 25-13, 25-13 and 25-15 sweep. VCU improved to 16-10 on the year, while the Spartans dropped to 6-16 in their last non-conference match of the season.
Senior
Jessica Johnson led all players with nine kills but also had 11 of NSU's 23 errors. The Spartans hit -.053 for the match, while the Rams ended the night with a .277 attack percentage.
VCU had runs of 15-2 in the first set and a pair of 7-1 spurts in the second set. They also won 13 of 16 points during a stretch in the third set before NSU closed the gap to 10 at the end of the match.
Vicki Giommarini had eight kills to lead VCU, although she tallied eight of her team's 15 attack errors. She was also one of two players in double figures in digs, tallying 11 while teammate Madalon Simpson led all players with 13. The Rams held a 44-30 edge in digs for the match.
VCU's Jasmin Sneed and Gina Tuzzolo each had seven kills on a combined 19 attacks.
For NSU, junior
Melvina Brown had eight digs.
NSU will play at MEAC leader Howard on Friday at 6 p.m.
