Derrik Jamerson Jr. Signs NLI with Spartan Basketball

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball program added its second player this week to its 2017 recruiting class when junior college guard Derrik Jamerson Jr. signed a national letter of intent to play for the Spartans beginning in the 2017-18 season.

The 6-foot-5, 170-pound Jamerson attends Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio. He is currently averaging 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Express. The sharpshooter is hitting better than 40 percent from 3-point range, 47 percent overall from the floor and 85 percent from the free throw line.

"We are thrilled to welcome Derrik to the Spartan family," said head coach Robert Jones. "He is a scorer and a tremendous shooter. At 6-5, he has great length for a shooting guard. He hails from right outside Detroit, and he will bring that inner-city toughness at the guard spot. In addition to his scoring, he is a tremendous rebounder from the guard slot. We look for great things in Derrik's two years at NSU!"

Jamerson, a native of Pontiac, Mich., earned second-team All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) honors during his freshman campaign at Owens CC in 2015-16. He ranked second on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game while adding 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.0 steals and 21 total blocks. He ranked 14th in the conference in rebounding and 15th in scoring.

He also posted eye-popping shooting percentages, hitting 43.2 percent overall, including 41.2 percent from 3-point range, the latter a mark that stood fourth in the conference. He sank 103-of-249 overall from beyond the arc and also shot 34-of-37 from the free throw line (91.9 percent). Jamerson made a 3-pointer in all but one game during his freshman year and had seven in a game twice. He scored a career-high 28 points against Edison Community College on Feb. 10 and reached double figures in rebounds in seven games. He tallied season highs of 14 rebounds and six assists twice each during the year.

Prior to attending Owens CC, Jamerson competed for Cornerstone Health and Technology High School in Detroit. He was named All-Detroit honorable mention by the Detroit Free Press and honorable mention All-Detroit Area by the Detroit News as a senior in 2015. He was also an honor roll student.

Jamerson joins high school guard Mastadi Pitt and Robert Morris transfer Steven Whitley in forming the 2017 recruiting class. Whitley is currently sitting out the 2016-17 season with the Spartans. Norfolk State will lose four seniors altogether off this year's team.
