Spears, Morgan State Outlast NSU 59-56

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Lexus Spears had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds and made the go-ahead layup with 48 seconds left as visiting Morgan State outlasted Norfolk State 59-56 on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

Koryn Lawrence scored 13 points and Brehanna Daniels 10 to lead NSU (2-20 overall, 2-10 MEAC).

Trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, the Spartans (2-20 overall, 2-10 MEAC) mounted a 17-3 run to tie the ballgame with 56 seconds left in the game. Daniels and Lawrence combined to score all but two points in the run. Daniels buried a 3-pointer from the right wing to cut NSU's deficit to three, than less than a minute later, she converted a traditional three-point play to tie the score at 54-all with 56 seconds left.

But Morgan State, which had trouble with NSU's full-court defense in the final period, broke the pressure after Daniels tied the game, leading to an uncontested layup by Spears at the other end with 48 seconds remaining. Lawrence missed a jumper at the other end, and MSU widened its lead as Spears hit one free throw and Danielle Robinson two more to make it 59-55 with 12 seconds remaining.

Leading 59-56, Robinson missed two foul shots with four seconds left, but MSU guard Braennan Farrar stole Siobhan Beslow's outlet pass in the closing seconds as the Spartans could not attempt a potential game-tying 3-pointer.

The Spartans struggled Saturday on the boards. Morgan State outrebounded NSU 46-35, which included 21 offensive boards by the visitors. That led to MSU holding a 32-22 edge in points in the paint and 16-4 in second-chance points.

Despite that disparity, NSU trailed just 33-28 at the half. But the Spartans managed just two field goals on 16.7 percent shooting (2-of-12) and committed five turnovers in a third quarter that saw the Bears double their halftime lead to 10 points, 43-33, entering the final stanza.

The Bears extended their lead to 51-37 as Spears scored inside off an assist by Spears. But NSU's scramble defense forced three turnovers and held MSU scoreless over a four-minute span as the Spartans rallied.

Robinson led MSU with 14 points as five Bears scored in double figures. After Spears' 13, Farrar, Zuri White and Tykyrah Williams added 10 points apiece.

NSU shot 40 percent from the floor and held MSU to just 33.8 percent shooting, but the Bears' 21 offensive rebounds led to 21 more shot attempts for the visitors.

Lawrence was 5-of-9 from the floor and had a team-high five assists for NSU. Daniels had nine of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Yazmen Hannah grabbed a team- and career-high eight rebounds.

The Spartans have a week off before facing Delaware State next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Dover, Del.
