Hampton Sweeps NSU in Battle of the Bay, 3-0

Highlights

NORFOLK
, Va. – Hampton started off strong and rode that early momentum to a 3-0 win over the Norfolk State volleyball team in a MEAC matchup on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.

The Lady Pirates won 25-14, 25-18 and 25-18 to improve to 9-14 overall and 4-3 in the MEAC. The duo of Reeana Richardson and Lena Washington combined for 21 kills to lead the way.

Freshman Taylor Eichelberger had six kills to lead NSU, which fell to 3-17 overall and 0-6 in the league.

Norfolk State was close early in the first set, getting a kill and service ace from senior Clarke Tyler to tie the score at 7-7. But the Pirates served seven straight times, part of a larger 16-5 run that broke the set wide open.

The second set was much more back and forth, but only after Hampton started with a 9-2 lead. The teams began to trade points, and Hampton called timeout after NSU scored three straight to get to within four at 16-12. But a short time later, the Pirates scored three straight to kill any chance of a Spartan comeback.

Hampton led 10-4 in the third, and runs of 5-1 and 5-2 later on extended the lead to as much as eight.

Tyler added five kills, seven digs and three blocks as the teams finished with five blocks apiece.

The Pirates hit .194 for the match, compared to .021 for NSU. The Spartans had just four more attack errors but 12 less digs as well.

Washington totaled 11 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and two service aces, and Richardson added 10 kills and eight digs. Setter Lena Reed-Petracek totaled 23 assists, seven digs, three aces and two blocks.

NSU closes out the weekend by hosting Delaware State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
