  1. Norfolk State remained in the thick of the MEAC football race with a 28-21 win over defending MEAC champion and No. 25 ranked North Carolina Central last Saturday in Durham, N.C.

  2. Juwan Carter passed for 230 yards and four touchdowns, two to Marcus Taylor, to lead the offensive attack. Three of Carter's TD passes came in the first half as the Spartans jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead.

  3. Taylor finished with a career-high 132 receiving yards on eight catches. He scored on TD plays of 42 and 58 yards, the latter coming midway through the fourth quarter after NCCU had cut its deficit to seven points.

  4. The Spartan defense forced four turnovers, recovering a fumble in the end zone to end one NCCU scoring chance and intercepting three passes. Two of those picks, by senior linebackers Kyle Archie and Anthony Smith, came in the final three minutes of the game as the Eagles were attempting to score the tying touchdown.

  5. The Spartan victory snapped NCCU's 18-game MEAC winning streak and kept the Spartans one loss behind unbeaten North Carolina A&T and Hampton in the conference standings.

  6. With the win, NSU moved into the BOXTOROW HBCU Division I coaches top 10 poll for the first time this season. The Spartans are tied for 10th in this week's poll with Prairie View A&M.

  7. Savannah State dropped to 0-7 on the season, 0-4 in the MEAC following a 52-27 non-conference defeat at Charleston Southern last Saturday. Quarterback D'Vonn Gibbons passed for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the loss, one each to Derek Kirkland and Uriah Oliver.

  8. The Tigers, however, could not slow down a potent Charleston Southern offense, which amassed 527 total yards. The Buccaneers also limited Savannah State to just 24 rushing yards on 24 attempts.

  9. SSU has now lost 10 straight games dating back to last year's 31-14 win over Norfolk State on Nov. 5, 2016. The Tigers have struggled defensively this season, ranking last in the MEAC in points allowed (38.7) and 10th in total defense (459.1 yards allowed).

  10. Gibbons is one of three players to take snaps at quarterback for SSU this year, and he leads the team with 573 passing yards and five touchdown passes. Kirkland has a team-high three receiving touchdowns.
