BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State used dominant first and third sets to earn a 3-0 victory over the Norfolk State volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at the Hill Field House.
The Bears won 25-11 and 25-12 in the opening and closing sets of the match. In between, NSU gave it a ride before MSU roared back late to win 25-21 for the eventual sweep.
Morgan State, which improved to 5-16 overall and 4-4 in the MEAC, won after hitting .268 and limited the Spartans to a .011 attack percentage. NSU (3-20, 0-9 MEAC) had just one more kill than hitting error.
The Spartans started a comeback in the second set after the Bears had used runs of 7-0 and 6-0 in the first set. Norfolk State pulled ahead by two early in that second stanza and then got two kills from freshman
Taylor Eichelberger during a 7-2 run. That extended the Spartan lead to 18-12.
But it did not take long for the momentum to change. After senior
Melvina Brown hit a kill for a 20-15 lead, Morgan State won the next six points and 10 of the last 11 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Morgan State had no trouble in the third set, jumping out to a 19-5 lead on the way to an easy last set victory.
Eichelberger led NSU with six kills.
Natashia Barker had 11 kills for the Bears, while Cristen Coryatt and Keana Browne each totaled eight. Barker also had 10 digs, helping MSU gain a 39-27 advantage over the Spartans. Norfolk State was also outscored at the service line, 7-1.
The Spartans return home to face Howard next Friday at 6 p.m. at Gill Gymnasium.
