NORFOLK, Va. – Senior guard/forward
Preston Bungei of the Norfolk State men's basketball team was honored by the MEAC on Tuesday when he was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
Bungei picked up the award in the first week of the season after tallying eight blocks, four steals and 11 rebounds in two games. He also scored 29 points and had five assists to start the year.
His best game of the week came on Monday at home against Lynchburg College. Bungei set new career highs with five blocks and four steals while tying his career best with eight rebounds. He made 7-of-13 from the field for a career-high 19 points as well.
Bungei, who sat out last year due to injury, also had three blocks and three rebounds in the season opener on Friday at Auburn while setting a new career best in assists with four.
The native of Albuquerque, New Mexico ranks second on the team in both scoring (14.5 points) and rebounds (5.5) to go with a team-best eight blocks.
NSU will head to San Diego to take on the University of San Diego on Saturday at 10 p.m. EST.
