Spartans Overwhelm Mid-Atlantic Christian, 112-34

NORFOLK, Va. – Six Norfolk State players scored in double figures in an easy 112-34 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian on Thursday night in a non-conference men's basketball game at Joseph Echols Hall.

NSU picked up its first win of the season in emphatic fashion, posting its second-largest margin of victory ever at 78. Only the 1955-56 team, with a 92-point win over Bowie State, has ever done better.

Senior Preston Bungei posted career highs with 21 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Junior Derrik Jamerson Jr. made 6-of-14 from 3-point range and 9-of-19 overall for a career-high 24-point night with six rebounds.

NSU (1-9) shot 42-of-85 from the field (49.4 percent) and set the school record with 37 3-point attempts, making 11. The Spartans broke the previous record of 34 set earlier this year at Auburn.

Norfolk State also held a 66-22 edge on the glass, including 30-6 on the offensive boards. The Spartans outscored MACU 60-8 in points in the paint and 29-3 in second-chance points.

The Mustangs had 24 turnovers compared to nine for NSU, which also held a 41-6 advantage in points off turnovers. MACU's 34 total points is tied for the third-fewest ever allowed by Norfolk State.

Jamerson hit a pair of 3-pointers early on to help NSU build a 23-2 lead before the Mustangs converted their first field goal more than eight minutes into the game. Junior Alex Long then added seven points in a short span to help get the lead to an eventual 30 points.

Senior Dan Robinson completed a 3-point play, Jamerson had a pair of layups and freshman Mastadi Pitt had five points late in the half as NSU led 60-15 at the break.

The Mustangs upped their scoring after the intermission, nearly doubling their first half total in the first four minutes of the second stanza. The Spartans scored the next 11 points of the game to open a 79-28 lead. It was part of a larger 25-2 run that made it 93-30 with seven and a half minutes left.

Jamerson made one last 3-pointer in the last minute of play for the final margin.

Long totaled 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting with eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Steven Whitley totaled 14 points, a career-high 14 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Both Pitt and senior Bryan Gellineau each scored 10. Gellineau made 5-of-6 from the field and also added eight boards, while Pitt handed out six assists.

Mid-Atlantic Christian shot just 10-of-50 for the game (20.0 percent), the first time since February of 2002 NSU held an opponent below 25 percent.

The Spartans tied a pair of Division I records as well. Their 26 assists tied the mark set at Coppin State on Feb. 21, 2015, and the rebound total of 66 tied last year's team that had 66 boards at Florida A&M. NSU's 85 field goal attempts were the second most in the D-I era.

Jamerson's 14 3-point attempts was just one off the school record of 15.

Jaelin Thomas led MACU with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, 4-of-7 from 3-point range.

NSU will host Niagara at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Echols Hall before traveling to Eastern Kentucky for a Monday night contest.
