BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team allowed the fewest points in the program's Division-I era in Monday night's 53-27 victory over Campbell.
The 27 points allowed are the fifth-fewest in team history and are eight points off the record of 19, set against Rutgers-Camden on Dec. 13, 1976. The previous D-I era record was 28 points, and that mark was set last year vs. Lincoln (Pa.).
The Fighting Camels (6-3) shot just 14.6 percent (7-of-48) in the loss. In the past 16 years, Norfolk State has not posted a better defensive field goal percentage. During the same span, Spartan opponents have shot sub-20 percent just once.
Kayla Roberts led all scorers with 18 points in the win. The senior guard/forward shot 6-of-15 from the field and poured in three 3-pointers. Roberts also grabbed six rebounds and shared the game-high in steals with three.
The Spartans (5-5) continued their shot-blocking ways in the victory, turning away eight shots.
Khadedra Croker posted six blocks in the game and now has six games with three or more rejections this season.
Roberts was the lone player to break double figures, but eight Spartans tallied at least two points.
Norfolk State held Summer Price – Campbell's leading scorer – to zero points on 0-of-11 shooting. Price entered the game averaging 17.4 points per outing for the Camels.
NSU led 10-6 after a low-scoring first quarter. The Spartans struck first on a Roberts layup and trailed only once in the period. Tatyana Carver put Campbell ahead 5-4 on a 3-pointer at the 4:24 mark, but that was CU's final field goal of the period as NSU scored six of the final seven points in the quarter.
Roberts scored five points in the first quarter while going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. The Spartans made six free throws in the period and 11 for the game on 57.9 percent shooting.
The Spartans separated for good in the second quarter on the strength of an extended 16-4 run over the final 7:17 of the half. Kyra Davis pulled Campbell to within three at 12-9 at the 7:17 mark. Norfolk State answered with consecutive treys by Roberts and
Alexys Long to push the lead to 18-9 with 6:23 left in the quarter.
The score remained the same until two minutes later, when Lauren McNamara-Clement knocked down a trey. That shot came at the 4:27 mark and would be Campbell's last basket in the quarter. Additionally, Campbell would not make another 3-pointer until the final minute of the fourth quarter.
For the game, the Fighting Camels shot 3-of-20 from deep for 15 percent.
Following McNamara-Clement's trey, the Spartans scored 10 of the final 11 points in the half.
Campbell's field goal drought extended into the third quarter as Norfolk State built up a 20-point advantage. CU did not find the bottom of the net until the 4:49 mark of the third quarter. Carver broke the dry spell with a layup that made the score 33-15.
Long immediately answered with a 3-pointer, and NSU proceeded to close out the quarter on a 9-2 run. The Spartans led 42-17 at the end of the third quarter and held Campbell to only four points in the period.
The Spartans led by as many as 33 points in the fourth quarter as NSU cruised to the finish line. Campbell recorded the first field goal of the quarter, but the Spartans scored 11 of the next 12 points.
Campbell eclipsed the 20-point threshold with 2:30 left in the game. Less than a minute later,
Shayla Tanner scored on a layup to put NSU ahead 53-20 – its largest lead of the game.
Tanner's basket was the last of the game for the Spartans, and Campbell ended the game on a 7-0 run.
NSU turned the ball over 17 times on Monday, but Campbell committed 19 turnovers, which led to 19 points for the Spartans.
The Spartans won the rebounding battle 46-32, but offensive rebounds were even at 12 apiece.
Norfolk State returns to action on Thursday with a 2 p.m. road contest with William & Mary.
