HAVERFORD, Va. – Sophomore
Jacob Milton helped the Norfolk State men's track and field team get its indoor season off to a strong start, setting a new personal record in winning the high jump at the Jack Pyrah Invitational hosted by Villanova on Saturday.
Last year's MEAC indoor and outdoor champion in the high jump, Milton cleared 7 feet, 0.5 inch, tied for the fourth-best height in the nation following the opening weekend of competition across the country. It was the first time he's cleared 7 feet indoors in his NSU career.Â
Milton led a 1-2-3 NSU sweep of the top places in the high jump. Fellow sophomore
Garth Warner just missed matching his indoor PR of 6-11 with a clearance of 6-10.75 on Saturday to take second place behind Milton.
Kequan Henley (6-2.75) placed third.
The high jump was one of two events where the Spartans swept first through third places. In the 3,000 meters, sophomore
Felix Kiprotich won in a time of 8 minutes, 50.04 seconds. Fellow sophomore
Bill Kemboi was close behind in 8:53.41 and junior
Tomas Fantaye came in third in 9:01.55.
The Spartans won two other races on Saturday. Freshman
Keith Brown won in his collegiate debut, finishing first in the 60 meters in 6.93 seconds. The quartet of
Trequan Barnes,
Jaylen Banks,
Moses Kamara and
Justin Pinder closed the meet by winning the 4x400 relay in 3:22.82.
Other top performances included freshman Barnes' third-place finish in the 500 meters (1:04.63), freshman
Patrick Booker's runner-up finish in the pole vault (12-11.5) and junior
Tyson Robinson's runner-up finish in the mile (4:35.32).
The Spartans are off the next month for the semester break. Their next meet is on Jan. 6 at George Mason.
