Spartan Women Win 5 Times in Opening Weekend at Villanova

Meet Results

HAVERFORD, Pa. –
The Norfolk State women's track and field team racked up five first-place finishes, four on the track, as the Spartans opened indoor season in style on Saturday at the Jack Pyrah Invitational.

Junior Tyrika Lee (60 meters), sophomores Martha Bissah (mile) and T'Nai Wells (60m hurdles), freshman Malika Pride (300 meters) and senior Brianna Hayes (high jump) had event victories for NSU in Saturday's meet, which was hosted by Villanova.

Lee clocked a PR of 7.60 seconds to get her indoor season off to a fast start. Lee also was the runner-up in the 300 meters behind her new teammate, Pride, who posted a time of 39.96 seconds in her first race as a Spartan.

Wells also clocked a personal-best time in NSU's opening weekend. She crossed the line in a time of 8.79 seconds in the 60 hurdles, more than a tenth ahead of her fastest time from her freshman season. Teammates Kellyann James, Ayana Dozier and Ashaila Bunch placed third through fifth in the hurdles.

Coming off a fall season where she broke the course record in winning the MEAC cross country title, Bissah won the mile in 5 minutes, 1.81 seconds Saturday at Villanova. The time was converted to 4:58.86 due to track size by the NCAA results system (TFRRS), which ranks as the second-fastest time in the nation's opening weekend of competition.

Another All-MEAC cross country runner from the fall, sophomore Ashah Koech, also got track season off to a strong start by clocking a collegiate best in the 3,000 meters (10:40.90), the fastest time by a MEAC athlete in the opening weekend of competition.

Finishing the day on the track, Bissah, Dozier, Pride and Crystal Green teamed to help the 4x400 relay team finish in fourth place.

In field events, Hayes cleared 5-1 to win the high jump, with Dozier placing second and James third. Daiysa Burrell was runner-up in the shot put (37-5.25) and Dozier placed fourth in the long jump (17-2).

The Spartans will take a month break for exams and the holiday season before their next meet, at George Mason on Jan. 6.
