NORFOLK, Va. – Hannah Shields gave up just three hits in seven shutout innings to lead Delaware State to a 7-0 win over the Norfolk State softball team on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The Hornets took the rubber match of the three-game MEAC series, shutting down the Spartan bats after NSU had come alive in game 2 on Saturday. DSU also pounded out 11 hits of its own, including three home runs.
Shields (3-7) earned her second win of the weekend, helping the Hornets improve to 4-1 in the league and 5-16 overall. NSU fell to 8-9 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC.
Four different players had at least two hits for the Hornets, who jumped on NSU starter
Megan Przeslawski in the second. Khaliyah Flournory and Desiree Moreno hit back-to-back solo homers to left field to start the inning, and an RBI single later in the frame gave them a 3-0 lead. The Hornets added a run in the third inning on an RBI single before leaving the bases loaded.
Then in the sixth, Delaware State added three more runs, including two on a two-run homer to dead center field off the bat of Mika Lumsden.
Flournory hit 3-for-4, while Lumsden was the only player to drive in two runs. Seven different players scored the seven runs for DSU.
Przeslawski (3-5) took the loss, while sophomore
Hunter Halford pitched six innings in relief and allowed nine hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts.
NSU travels to Radford on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. before returning home to host Maryland Eastern Shore next weekend.
