HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton ended the Norfolk State women's tennis team three-match winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Monday afternoon at the Neilson-Screen Stadium.
Dajana Cvjetkovic and
Bruna Goncalves claimed the only two points for the Spartans (4-7, 2-2 MEAC) with singles wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 positions, respectively.
The Pirates (10-3, 6-0 MEAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles contests. Hampton's top duo of Mariam Mitaishvili and Kristina Titova defeated Cvjetkovic and
Liza Gordeeva 6-1, while Mikaela Pierce and Cherise Slocombe cruised to a 6-2 win over
Ana Popovic and
Bruna Goncalves at the No. 2. Hampton's third pair of Haley Mullins and Anastasiia Romanova completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory over
Paula Fortuno and
Aranza Mellet.
In singles action, Cvjetkovic earned a 6-3, 7-5 straight-set victory over Titova, while Goncalves defeated Pierce in a three-setter, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Hampton claimed singles victories at the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 positions, but not without a fight as three of the four matches went three sets.
Mitaishvili defeated Gordeeva 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, while Slocombe earned a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Popovic at No. 3.
Mullins handed the Spartans' Fortuno just her third singles loss of the season by a score of 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 at the No. 4 position. Romanova claimed the only straight-set victory for Hampton by defeating Mellet 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6.
Norfolk State will begin a two-match road trip to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday when the Spartans take on Morgan State at 2 p.m.
