Spartans Cap Non-Conference Slate at Defending FCS Champion, No. 1 JMU

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Norfolk State football team takes to the road for the first time this season for its stiffest challenge yet, a date with No. 1 ranked and defending FCS national champion James Madison this Saturday in Harrisonburg. Kickoff in the first-ever meeting between the teams is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium.

1st and 10
1. The Spartans begin the road portion of their schedule and cap their non-conference slate with a first-ever matchup with No. 1 James Madison this week.

2. The Spartans are 0-2 on the young season following a 20-6 setback at home against William & Mary last Saturday.

3. The Spartan offense was kept out of the end zone for the second straight week. NSU's points came via two field goals from freshman Josh Nardone, who connected from 19 yards out in the second quarter and 37 yards in the third.

4. Freshman quarterback Juwan Carter passed for 160 yards off the bench. Senior linebacker Kyle Archie posted 14 tackles to lead both teams and match his career high.

5. This week's game marks the first time NSU has ever faced a No.-1 ranked FCS opponent. The Spartans are 3-27 against teams ranked in the Stats FCS (formerly Sports Network) Poll. Last year's loss at No. 2 Richmond represented the previous high ranking for an NSU opponent.

6. NSU is 1-14-1 all-time against teams currently in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spartans are 1-2-1 against Elon, but a combined 0-12 against William & Mary (0-7), Maine (0-2), Villanova (0-1), Richmond (0-1) and Towson (0-1).

7. NSU head coach Latrell Scott was formerly an assistant at JMU. He coached the tight ends in 2012.

8. JMU improved to 2-0 on the season with a 52-10 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday in the Dukes' home opener in Harrisonburg.

9. Quarterback Bryan Schor threw five touchdown passes in the win over ETSU. Running back Cardon Johnson, the nation's sixth-leading rusher, also scored a touchdown.

10. The Dukes won the 2016 Division I FCS national championship, finishing 14-1 en route to the second title in school history and first since 2004.
