1st and 10
1. The Spartans open MEAC play looking for their first win of the season this Saturday when they travel up U.S. Route 13 to face Delaware State in Dover. The Spartans are 0-3 on the year following a 75-14 loss at No. 1 and defending FCS national champion James Madison last week, NSU's first-ever game against the FCS No. 1 ranked team.
2. NSU is also seeking to avoid the program's first 0-4 start since 2014 this week.
3. The Spartan offense was kept out of the end zone for the third straight week. NSU's points came via two a 33-yard fumble return for touchdown by safety
Nhyre' Quinerly in the second quarter and a school-record 100-yard kickoff return by
Marcus Taylor in the fourth.
4. For the game, NSU was outgained 728-91 in total yardage.
5. Converted running back
Quintreil Chung made a game-high 11 tackles in his first game at linebacker, Quinerly was in on 10 tackles and
Aaron Chandler recorded the first interception of his career.
6. Like the Spartans, Delaware State is also in search of its first win following a 59-16 loss at West Virginia University of the Big 12 last Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.
7. DSU tied the game at 7-all on an 81-yard TD pass from Jack McDaniels to Nyfease West in the first quarter and recorded three first-half takeaways, but the Mountaineers led 45-10 at the half.
8. The Hornets did manage 301 yards of offense against the Mountaineers, including 65 rushing yards from Brycen Alleyne and 114 through the air by McDaniels.
9. This week marks the first meeting between these two teams since 2014. In the MEAC's unbalanced schedule, the Spartans did not face either DSU or Florida A&M (its next opponent, on Oct. 7) in 2015 or 2016.
10. DSU has won three straight meetings between the programs, and all three have come by a touchdown or less. The Hornets won 13-10 on an overtime field goal at NSU in 2014, topped the Spartans 14-7 in 2013 in the last meeting in Dover, and also won 20-17 in Norfolk in 2012.
