LEXINGTON, Va. – The Norfolk State men displayed their depth in the high jump this past weekend at the VMI Keydet Invitational, placing three finishers in the top 10.
After sophomore
Jacob Milton led the way for the Spartan jumpers in the team's first two meets, it was fellow sophomore
Garth Warner who claimed the event victory at VMI. Warner matched his season best with a clearance of 6 feet, 10.75 inches. Milton also cleared 6-10.75, but finished second based on more misses.
Sophomore
Kequan Henley also finished in the top 10 in the high jump over the weekend, taking ninth with a top leap of 6-4.75.
On the track, freshman
Trequan Barnes had the high finish for the Spartans with a runner-up showing in the 400 meters. Barnes crossed the line in 48.00 flat in his first 400m race as a collegian. Barnes also went on to place 11th in the 200 meters in 21.89 seconds.
Other individual top-10 finishes were turned in by
Tyson Robinson in the 800 meters (sixth, 1:56.10) and Phil Griggs in the 500m (10th, 1:07.13).
The Spartans also fared well in the relays, with top-six efforts in both the 4x400 and 4x800 events. The 4x800 team of Robinson,
Felix Kiprotich,
Anteneh Girma and
Haileyesus Demsie placed third in 8:15.61. The 4x400 relay consisting of Barnes, Griggs,
Jaylen Banks and
Justin Pinder won its heat and was sixth overall in 3:19.40.
The Spartans are back in action this weekend at the Penn State National.
