DOVER, Del. – Junior
Bojana Bolozan and sophomore
Jannel Ezeagwu each set career highs in kills as the Norfolk State volleyball team swept Delaware State on Sunday afternoon in a MEAC match at Memorial Hall.
The Spartans needed extra points to earn a 28-26 win in the first set, but followed that up by winning 25-17 and 25-19 in the next two sets for the 3-0 win. They hit .345 as a team, and Bolozan and Ezeagwu played a big part in that.
Bolozan totaled 16 kills while hitting .737. Ezeagwu had eight kills on 14 swings (.571) with three blocks. The duo helped NSU improve to 1-3 in the league and 2-12 overall. DSU fell to 2-18 on the season and 0-3 in the MEAC.
Bolozan finished with the second-best hitting percentage by an NSU player with at least 10 kills in a match in the Division I era.
The win broke a 15 match MEAC losing streak for the Spartans.
Bolozan had six kills in each of the first two sets. She had a couple to start the match, although DSU later led 11-9 in the early going. But the Spartans scored seven of the next eight points for a 16-12 advantage. DSU called timeout and eventually got to within one. The Spartans pushed back ahead, and while the Hornets were able to hold off set serve for a short bit, NSU eventually put them away.
Aside from a bad start in the third set, the Spartans were able to take control from there. They won the first four points and eight of the first 10 in the second set. Bolozan had three kills to keep the Spartans in the lead, and after a service error made it 14-9, they surged ahead. They won seven of the next nine points for a 10-point advantage.
Sophomore
Taylor Eichelberger had a kill to make it 21-11. The Hornets later won five of seven points to get the margin a little closer by the end.
Four different NSU players had at least three kills in the third set, although it began with the Spartans down 6-2. After DSU's Sydney Armbrister had back-to-back kills for a 10-6 lead, Norfolk State took over. Five different players had kills during a 9-2 run. Up 15-12, the Spartans later won three more in a row for a 19-14 advantage.
The teams traded points until a kill from Bolozan and a block by Ezeagwu and sophomore
Quiana Griffin ended the match.
Eichelberger had six kills, and Griffin added five. Junior
Halley McKnight totaled 19 assists and 10 digs for the double-double.
Norfolk State committed just 11 attack errors all match, while the Hornets hit .115 but had 15 more errors.
NSU will host Howard on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Gill Gymnasium.
