5 Spartans Named to All-MEAC Football Teams

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State football team placed five players on the postseason All-MEAC teams, which were announced Monday by the conference office.

Junior linebacker Nigel Chavis was voted to the All-MEAC first team. Junior defensive back J.T. Wahee and sophomore punter Taylor Goettie were second-team selections, while junior defensive back Bobby Price and return specialist Marcus Taylor were named to the third team.

Chavis, who was a preseason first-team All-MEAC selection, earned postseason honors for the second year in a row. A third-team All-MEAC defensive end as a sophomore in 2017, Chavis has recorded 66 total tackles, 13 for loss, with 5.5 sacks in NSU's first 10 games of the season. He is fourth in the MEAC in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss. Chavis has also recovered two fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown, while forcing two fumbles, deflecting three passes and notching a team-best eight quarterback hurries.

Wahee, like Chavis a third-team All-MEAC selection last season, has amassed 50 tackles (37 solo), with one tackle for loss, one interception and a team-best 10 pass breakups. He is fourth in the MEAC in passes defended per game, at 1.1. He broke up four passes alone in the loss to MEAC champion North Carolina A&T.

Goettie enters the final game of the season with a 42.1-yard punt average, third-best in the MEAC. He is on pace to break Dylan Shaddix's single-season NSU school record average of 41.3 yards per punt, set in 2014. Twelve of Goettie's 44 punts have landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

Price is another integral part of NSU's No. 2 ranked MEAC pass defense. Price is fourth on the team with 53 tackles, 1.5 for loss. He has two interceptions and eight pass deflections, and ranks third in the MEAC in passes defended per game (1.11). He has also recovered a pair of fumbles. The Spartans are currently fifth in the nation in fewest passing yards allowed per game, at 148.4.

Taylor also picked up All-MEAC accolades for the second straight year. He was a second-team selection last season as a return specialist and enjoyed another fine season in 2018. Taylor averages 23.3 yards per kick return and 25.7 per punt return, and ranks 10th nationally in combined kick return yards (709). He returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown against North Carolina A&T, NSU's first punt return score since 2014.

The MEAC also released three of the conference's top award winners on Monday. Micah Shaw of North Carolina A&T was named Offensive Lineman of the Year, Howard running back Dedrick Parson was tabbed Rookie of the Year and N.C. A&T's Sam Washington was voted Coach of the Year. The MEAC's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year award winners will be announced on Dec. 4 as part of the National Football Foundation's annual awards ceremony in New York.

The Spartans (4-6) conclude their 2018 season on Saturday at Liberty University in a non-conference game that was originally scheduled for Sept. 15, but was postponed due to Hurricane Florence.
