Barnes Sets Record in 500 Meters, 1 of 3 Wins for NSU Men at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. –
Freshman Trequan Barnes continued his strong indoor track campaign with a VMI facility record in the 500 meters, one of three first-place finishes for the Spartan men at the VMI Winter Relays over the weekend.

Barnes won the 500m in a time of 1:03.52, two seconds faster than his previous season-best in the event. Barnes also clocked a PR in the 200 meters, placing third in 21.67 seconds.

NSU had two other first-place finishes at the meet. Junior Tyson Robinson won the 1,000 meters in 2:33.80. Sophomore Garth Warner won the high jump, matching his own VMI facility record in the event with a clearance of 6 feet, 10.75 inches. Warner also won the high jump with the same height at the Keydet Invitational in January.

Those were just three of a slew of top-10 finishes for the Spartans at VMI. Keith Brown and Jaylen Banks both registered two top-five efforts. Brown PRed in the 200 meters, placing fifth in 22.09 seconds. He also claimed third in the 60 meters (6.90). Banks finished fourth in the 500 (1:05.64) and fifth in the 400 (49.56). 

In the middle distances, Felix Kiprotich finished third in the 800 meters in a season-best time of 1:54.85. The distance standouts included Tomas Fantaye and Bill Kemboi, who placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 5,000 meters; and Anteneh Girma, who claimed ninth in the 3,000 (8:56.94). 

The VMI meet was NSU's final tuneup before the MEAC Indoor Championships, which run this Thursday through Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md. NSU was the MEAC indoor runner-up last season.
